Can I install a Stem Cap Mount or Stem Cap Mount Adjustable, without replacing a stem spacer that is part of my bicycle?
Ideally, the Stem Cap Mount or Stem Cap Mount Adjustable are attached to the fork steerer tube, replacing a standard 5mm stem spacer*, and are locked securely in place by the stem cap. If the fork steerer tube is not long enough, the Stem Cap Mount or Stem Cap Mount Adjustable can still be installed by manually aligning the Stem Cap Mount or Stem Cap Mount Adjustable with the stem cap before tightening.
*Bicycles typically have 30-40mm of stem spacers, in increments of 5mm, 10mm, and so on, to allow the user to adjust the height of the stem.
Why is an actual stem cap not included with the Stem Cap Mount or Stem Cap Mount Adjustable?
The stem cap is a component that is specific to each bicycle’s steering adjustment, meaning a change of stem cap may require readjustment of the steering assembly. For this reason, the Stem Cap Mount and Stem Cap Mount Adjustable are designed to reuse the bicycle’s existing stem cap to reduce the need for readjustment.
Which Cycle Mount is recommended for use with my bicycle and style of riding?
The Stem Cap Mount and Stem Cap Mount Adjustable’s proximity to the stem cap make them ideal for bicycles with shorter or more upright stems. These include gravel, mountain, or commuter bicycles that typically also see more upright cycling postures. In contrast, the Handlebar/Stem Mount, or one of our Out Front Mounts remain better choices for road bicycles that typically have longer stems (100 to 140mm) and road cyclists with more aggressive cycling postures.
Your bike's model and make will determine which mounts can be attached, if you're not sure about this, you can reach out to our Support Team here, along with a photo of your bike's handlebar / stem area and we'll be happy to advise any potential options for you!
